Abstract

1,091,643. High voltage switches. S. & C. ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 6, 1965 [July 12, 1965], No. 51631/65. Heading H2B. A high-voltage isolating switch comprises two contact-carrying blades (61, 62) attached to the upper ends of a pair of rotatable insulator posts (13, 14) whose other ends are coupled to an overcentre toggle linkage (Fig. 3, not shown), and co-operate with resilient buffers (45, 46) (Fig. 4, not shown) just before the toggle linkage reaches the centre position so that the blades (61, 62) are stopped with their contacts in engagement substantially without vibration. Each of the buffers (45) comprises a stack of resilient pads (56) between a piston (52) and a cylinder (53). One blade (61) carries a contact socket (131) (Figs. 12, 13, not shown), comprising a plurality of main spring-urged resilient blades (141) and a pair of auxiliary stainless steel arcing contact rods (151) assembled together inside a sleet hood (133). The other blade carries a contact plug 165 (Figs. 15, 16, not shown), and an arcing contact (171), together with a pair of arcuate corona shields (176) above and below the contacts. The contact blades (61, 62) are attached to the insu lators by means of plates (72) which are slotted to allow for angular adjustment. Connections are made to the contacts by way of sleeves (91) slotted (at 93) and surrounded by garter springs (94) (Fig. 5, not shown). In series with the isolating switch is a circuit-breaker (105) which is opened by a tripping mechanism (107) controlled by the initial opening movement of the insulator post (13) (Fig. 2, not shown).
