Abstract

934,067. Stoppers; cantainers. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc. March 13, 1961 [March 14, 1960], No. 9066/61. Classes 66 and 125(3). A package 10 for gas-producing foods comprises a container 12 of a flexible plastic or paper, and a one-piece flexible plastics closure with co-operating parts 24 and 42 for retaining the closure in engagement with the container, and cooperating parts 22 and 38 for forming a seal between the closure and the containers which separate with excess pressure to allow gas to escape through the passage maintained by the spacing lugs 44 on part 42. The filled containers are stacked with their bases engaged by the ridges 32 in each lid 14, while nested lids in a machine assembling the lids on to the filled containers are prevented from jamming together by the point contacts between the corners 58 of ribs 52 and the lead-in portion 54; the ribs 52 also serve to prevent a supplementary seal between parts 50 of the lid and 26 of the container. The lid is provided with a portion 56 overlying the container bead 28. In other forms of the invention the part 38 extends slightly down a face 16 on the container, and in a further modification the seal is formed by a projection 80 impinging upon the sidewall 16d as in Fig. 8a.
