Abstract
An alloy for high temperature service contains in percentage by weight: .Mo.8-65 .Nb.2-30 .Si.15-45 .Ti.10-65 The alloy may be made by conventional melting and casting techniques, or may be made by powder metallurgy methods from powders, 95% of which are less than 75 microns in diameter, the compacts being heated to a temperature of at least 900 DEG C. for a time sufficient to bring about alloying. The powder mixture may consist of elemental materials or may contain alloys or compounds of the constituents. The compositions may be shaped by slip casting or cold pressing, followed by firing at temperatures above 900 DEG C., or may be hot pressed at not less than 1000 lb/sq. inch and 900 DEG C. The powder may be first moistened with water, 1-5% solutions of sodium hydroxide or a 1% solution of sodium molybdate. Use of the composition for tools, turbine buckets, engine components, electrical heating elements, furnace components and, when crushed, as abrasive grit, is referred to.
