Abstract

527,064. Alloys. HAESLER, J. J., and EISEN, C. March 30, 1939, No. 9959. Convention date, April 14, 1938. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group V] Alloys for tools and other purposes, of the type comprising carbides of fourth, fifth, or sixth group metals, particularly such as contain titanium carbide as the principal constituent, are made by heating a carbide and an auxiliary metal, which may include chromium with or without nickel, and with or without other metals such as tin, vanadium, and zinc, to a temperature above the melting point of the auxiliary metal and below the melting point of the carbide and then applying increasing continuous pressure accompanied by vibration until the temperature has fallen below the melting point of either constituent. The alloy may consist of 40-98 per ,cent. of titanium carbide, with an iron group metal and about half as much chromium, for example 75 per cent. of titanium carbide, 17 per cent. of nickel, and 8 per cent. of chromium; or a composition suitable for mounting an abrasive may consist of 60 per cent. of titanium carbide, 25 per cent. of aluminium, and 15 per cent. of chromium and nickel. In some cases the materials may be prealloyed by heating under non-oxidizing conditions, powdering the product, and heating it under pressure as above. The treatment under pressure may be carried out in an induction furnace in graphite moulds, each comprising a number of compartments, in which the powder 61 is compressed by plugs 66 under the pressure of a graphite post 54 and steel bar 28. After the contents of the moulds have reached the required temperature, pressure is applied by a hydraulic jack 36, vibration being simultaneously applied, for example by striking the bar 28 with a hammer, or by mechanical or electrical means 29. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to silicides, tellurides and borides as constituents of the alloys. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
