Abstract

932,158. Dashpots. BROOKHIRST IGRANIC Ltd. July 19, 1961 [Aug. 30, 1960], No. 26145/61. Class 108(3). In a pneumatic time delay device in which a flexible diaphragm 14 divides a cavity in a body 10 with a cover plate 12 into upper and lower chambers the diaphragm is arranged to seal and open respectively a part annular exhaust passage 44 leading from the lower chamber to atmosphere when the pressure developed in the lower chamber is correspondingly below and above the exhaust pressure. The annular passage 44, which is formed concentrically about a part-spherical cavity 38 in the body 10, communicates through short passages 46 with a passage 48 which extends across the body 10 and has filters 50 in its outlet openings. The diaphragm 14, has a bead 14a which seats in an annular recess 52 in the body 10 and is clamped between the latter and a flange 12a of the cover plate 12 which is secured to the body 10 by screws 56 and has a ring of apertures 60 open to the atmosphere, the lower chamber, formed by the cavity 38, communicates through a small passage 40 with the tapered inner end portion 42a of a passage 42 which leads to the transverse passage 48 and is internally threaded to receive the threaded portion of a metering pin 64 having a tapered portion 64a which co-operates with the taper 42a. The centre portion 14d of the diaphragm 14 is moulded to the head 16a of a pin 16 which extends through a nylon bearing 62 in a centre boss 12c on the cover plate 12 and has a stop 18 connected to its outer end a compression spring 22 being constrained between the cover plate 12 and a cup member 20 which co-operates with the stop 18 and the arms 26a of a toggle switch lever 26. Upward movement of the rod 16 from the position shown in Fig. 2 is retarded air only entering the lower chamber at a restricted rate through the opening 40 the exhaust passage 44 being closed by the peripheral portion 14b of the diaphragm 14. The build up of pressure in the lower diaphragm chamber as the rod 16 descends causes the edge portion 14b of the diaphragm 14 to be lifted off the passage 44 and provide rapid exhaustion of air from the lower chamber. A small space X between the diaphragm edge portion 14b and the adjacent portion 12a of the cover plate 12 is provided to accommodate the raising of the diaphragm portion 14b.
