Abstract

618,836. Fluid-actuated valves. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. Nov. 14, 1946, No. 33836. Convention date, June 19. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXI] The lower plate 28 of the air release valve 11 of a device for raising submerged objects is attached to the air container 1 and has a central aperture 31 which is closed by the disc 16 and gasket 32 and is connected to an upper plate 29 by posts 30. A flexible diaphragm 33 is attached to the edges of plate 29 to form the chamber 34 which is joined to the container by the opening 36 of spindle 35 connecting the diaphragm to disc 16. Thus, the air and water pressures on the diaphragm and disc neutralize each other and a constant closing pressure is applied to the valve at all depths by the spring 43 acting between the head 41 on the diaphragm and the boss 38 on the rigid plate 37, and adjusted by the nut 39. The sheathed cable 17 is connected to the disc 16 by the turnbuckle 18, and at the lower end is attached the plate 20, which has three rods 21 guided in the plate 5 and attached to plate 22. An inverted parachute 23 is connected at its inner periphery to the plate 22 and at its outer edge by extensions 25 and straps 26 to the container. When the container runs more quickly than desired, the drag exerted by the parachute is sufficient to open the disc 16 and permit air to escape.
