Abstract
931,443. Reachers. L. JENKS, and H. S. G. VINER. Aug. 10, 1959 [May 8, 1958], No. 34998/61. Divided out of 931,441. Class 61. A reacher comprises an arm 2 having a head 5 at one end carrying jaws 24, 25 and at the other end a handle unit 71 including a pair of relatively movable handles 79, 80 for operating the jaws, the handle unit being adjustable relatively to the arm. The arm 2 includes a connecting rod 7 the longitudinal movement of which in the arm operates the jaws. The handle unit is connected with the rod 7 by a chain 84 so that movement of the handles towards each other exerts a pull on the rod 7 and operates the jaws. The chain is connected to a member 87 through which the threaded end of the rod 7 passes and carries an internally threaded block 89 which is screwed or unscrewed on the rod 7 to adjust the position of the rod relatively to the member 87, a locking screw 90 being provided. The handle unit 71 comprises a body part 73 pivotally mounted on a fixed carrier part 72 which is secured to the end of the arm 2, the overlapping walls of the parts 72, 73 being connected by bolts or rivets 74. A stud 75, fitted through a hole in the wall of the part 72, passes through a slot 76 in the wall of the movable body part 73. A clamping nut 77 and washer 78 are provided to lock the parts 72, 73 in required relative angular position. The chain 84 passes over a roller 85 journalled on a pin 86 mounted in the fixed part 72, the position of the pin being so selected that the chain passes through the pivotal axis 74 of the unit 71. A stirrup-shaped member 61 is provided for holding the handles after they have been pressed towards each other. Specifications 632,621, 739,209, 931,442 and 931,444 also are referred to.
