Abstract
770,196. Hinges. CHEW, Y. L. June 10, 1955 [June 21, 1954], No. 18153/54. Class 65 (2). [Also in Group XIV] In a pair of scissors, shears, &c., the pivoted limbs are pressed together by a flexible U-shaped shackle embracing the two limbs at the pivot and passing through the space between the handles, the pivot pin passing through the leg portions of the shackle and having means for exerting clamping pressure on the legs of the shackle. As shown, a headed bolt 5 forms the pivot pin, the head 5a bearing on one leg of the shackle 1a and a nut 6 screwed on the bolt shank bearing on the other leg of the shackle. In modifications the bolt shank screws into a threaded hole or integral nut in the leg of the shackle remote from the bolt head, is formed with a non-circular shoulder engaging a correspondingly-shaped aperture in that leg or the pivot pin is in the form of a rivet burred over at the end remote from the head to bear against the adjacent leg of the shackle. In a further modification one end of leaf springs secured one to each handle bears against opposite sides of the bridge portion 1a of the shackle to prevent rotation of the shackle when the pivoted limbs are moved.
