693,500. Scaffolding clamps. HAWES, A. H. Oct. 10, 1951 [July 12, 1950], No. 17419/50. Class 20(ii) Each pair of jaws 12, 24 of a scaffolding clamp are hinged together at 22 and a nut 30 is pivoted at 28 to the jaw 12 and adapted to receive a threaded bolt 31 formed with a shoulder 37 which in the clamping position engages behind fork arms 36 on the jaw 24, the arrangement being such that by partially unscrewing the bolt 31 the bolt and nut can be swung about the pivot 28 to open the clamp. and the threaded part 33 of the bolt shank remains wholly within the nut and is thus protected from wear other than by co-action with the nut. The unthreaded part 34 of the bolt shank which is disposed between the fork arms 36 has a diameter smaller than the threaded part 33 and projections formed on the nut 30 are adapted to engage with the end of the threaded part 33 to prevent its withdrawal from the nut. The two inner jaws 12, 13 may be welded together or, as shown, secured together 'by a swivel pin 16. Opening movement of each outer jaw 24 is limited to approximately 90 degrees by engagement of a part 38 of the jaw 24 with a nose 39 on the hinge lug 21 of the inner jaw 12.
