Abstract

507,411. Scaffold clamps. BURTON, J. Oct. 12, 1937, No. 27761. [Class 20.(ii)] A scaffold clamp comprises a pair of jaws, one of which has at one end a pivot pin 18 disposed in fixed relationship therewith, and the other of which has connected thereto at one end a bearing member 16 with which the pivot pin 18 engages pivotally to permit of the jaws moving relatively to each other, said bearing member having a portion extending from the pivot pin towards the first-mentioned jaw and also portions 16a, 16b disposed on each of two opposite sides of the pivot pin and connected with the other jaw; the clamping means for the jaws comprises a bolt 27 which has aT-head 29 engaging one jaw and a nut 31 adapted to apply clamping pressure to the other jaw. As shown in the drawings, the clamp comprises two jaws 13, 14 pivoted at right-angles to each other on the opposite sides of the arms 17 of a main jaw or plate 10 which is of cruciform shape in side elevation. Each of the jaws 13, 14 is pivoted by means of a pair of spaced lugs 15 on the jaw fitting over a bearing member or lug 16 on the arm 17, a pin 18 being passed through the lugs 15, 16 and having its ends riveted into engagement with the outer faces of the lugs 15. The pivot pin 18 is so disposed in relation to the lugs 15, 16 that the pivoted jaw 13, 14 is prevented from opening too far by the engagement of the base 19 of the jaw with the outer end 16c of the lug 16. Alternatively, the end of each jaw may be provided with a fixed T-head which engages a pocket in the arm 17, and a slot is provided in this arm to receive the shank of the T-head. The opposite sides of the plate 10 are provided with part-cylindrical seatings. 11, 12 disposed at right-angles to each other to co-operate with the jaws 13, 14. Each of the arms 20 of the plate 10 is formed with a pocket 21 provided with four converging sides 22, 23 and a part-cylindrical base 24 which is engaged by the T-head 29 of the bolt 27 ; the base 24 is provided with a slot 25 for the passage of the shank 26 of the bolt, and one side 28 of the slot is adapted to be engaged by the shank 26 so as to limit the inward pivotal movement of the bolt when the head of the latter rocks about the surface 24. Each of the jaws. 13, 14 is forked at the end opposite the hinge for the reception of the screw-threaded end of the bolt 27 which is adapted to receive a nut 31 and washer 30, the latter being received in a circular recess 33 adjacent the fork. The clamp may be used to connect two scaffold members together in varying transverse angular relationship ; it may also be used to connect scaffold members in end-to-end relation, in which case the clamp comprises two pairs of jaws hinged together about an axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the scaffold members.
