Description

March 6, 1962 c. T. MANZ BENCH MOUNT FOR LOCKING JAW PLIERS Filed July 9, 1959 ma /;me bzWIT/% A/Z,
United States This invention relates to a bench mount for looking jaw pliers whereby such pliers may be fixedly attached to a bench or the like, so that the work piece held in the pliers may be worked upon with both hands and, therefore, more efiectively worked upon.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel mount for looking jaw pliers so that these pliers may be attached to a bench or the like, and also so that the work piece may be held at various angles and positions so that it may be more effectively worked upon by the workman.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel mount for looking jaw pliers of the character stated, in which the pliers can be readily removed from the mount for various other uses as required.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a novel bench mount for looking jaw pliers in which the pliers may be rotated, tilted, or adjusted after the pliers 'are gripped in the mount and as might be required by the workman.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a novel bench mount of the character stated, which is simple in Construction and easy to manipulate.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims.
In the drawing:
FIGURE l is a side elevation of my bench mount for looking paw pliers.
FIGURE 2 is an end View of the same.
FIGURE 3 is a perspective View of the pliers holding fingers.
FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary transverse sectional View of one of the brackets of the bench mount.
FIGURE 5 is an end View of a modified form of bench mount.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, it is frequently very desirable to fixediy mount looking jaw pliers so that a work piece can be held as though it were in a vise and, furthermore, so that the work piece can be rotated or adjusted to various positions as might be re quired by the workman. The bench mount consists of a substantially U-shaped bracket 1, which includes a screw 2 threaded through the lower arm 3 of the bracket 1. The screw 2 engages the bench or the like 4, thus fixedly mounting the bracket 1 to the bench. An angle 5 is rotatably mounted on the bracket 1 by means of the bolt 6 which extends through the horizontal arm of the angle 5, and also the top plate 7 of the bracket 1. Cooperating teeth or serrations 8 in the angle 5 and the top plate 7 of the bracket 1 will hold the angle in its various adjusted positions after the nut on the bolt 6 has been tightened. Thus the mount can be rotated around a vertical axis to various required positions. A second angle fitting 9 is adjustably mounted on the angle 5 by means of the bolt 10 which extends through both of these members. A nut 10' is threaded on the bolt 10 to hold the members 5 and 9 together. The matching faces of the angle 5 and the fitting 9 is serrated or toothed as shown at 11 so that these parts will remain in their various required adjusted positions. A cup 12 is mounted on the upper face of the fitting 9, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, and this cup is held atent O in position on the fitting 9 by means of the bolt and nut 13. The engaging faces of the cup 12 and fitting 9 are also toothed or serrated, as shown at 14, to prevent possible slippage to these members relative to each other after they have been adjusted. The upper face of the fitting 9 is provided with an annular projection 15 which extends into the bottom of the cup 12 for the purpose of centering this cup and to properly align the teeth 14.
The looking jaw pliers 16 are of a usual and well known type, including what is termed a fixed arm 17 and a pivoted or movable arm 18. The arm 17 is substantially U- shaped in oross-section and is gripped and held in the cup 12 by the following means: A pair of fingers 19-20 are fixedly mounted on the bolt 13 and these two fingers are properly spaced to engage the sides of the arm 17. The upper ends of the fingers 19 and 20 are each formed with a hook 21 to engage the edge of the U-shaped arm 17. Thus when the nut on the bolt 13 is tightened the cup 12 will be pressed tightly against one arm of the fitting 9, and also the fingers 19 and 20 will be pulled downwardly against the arm 17 of the looking pliers 16. Thus the entire plier gripping assembly is tightly held in position. The upper edge of the cup 12 is notched, as shown at 22, and these notches receive the arm 17 of the looking pliers, as shown in FIG. 1, thus securely holding the looking pliers on the cup 12 and still permitting the movable arm 18 of the pliers to be manipulated so that a work piece can be gripped in the jaws of the pliers.
In the modification, shown in FIG. 5, the bracket 23 which attaches the mount to the bench 4 is formed in the shape of an angle and is fixedly attached to the bench by means of suitable bolts or Wood screws 24. The fitting 25 is identical in Construction to the fitting 9 and is attached to the vertical arm of the bracket 23 by means of the bolt 26. The cup 27, in which the pliers 16 are fastened, is identical in Construction to the cup 12 and is attached to the horizontal arm of the fitting 25 by means of the bolt 28, which is identical to the bolt 13 which is a part of the pliers engagng fingers previously described. The pliers 16 can be gripped and held in a fixed position on the bench 4 in the same manner as previously described, and can be variously tilted and rotated to different positions which are required for the particular work piece gripped by the pliers.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A bench mount for looking jaw pliers comprising a bracket, means securing said bracket to a bench, an angle, a vertically extending bolt pivotally coupling said angle and bracket, a fitting, a horizontally extending bolt coupling said fitting and said angle, a cup adapted and arranged to receive one arm of a looking jaw plier therein, a vertically extending bolt connecting the cup and the fitting permitting pivotal adjustment of said cup, and a pair of spaced ngers mounted on the last named bolt, said fingers engaging and releasably gripping one arm of a looking jaw plier to hold the plier in the cup.
2. A bench mount for looking jaw pliers comprsing a bracket, means securing said bracket to a bench, an angle, a vertically extending bolt pivotally coupling said angle and bracket, a fitting, a horizontally extending bolt coupling said fitting and said angle, a cup adapted and arranged to receive one arm of a looking jaw plier therein, a vertically extending bolt connecting the cup and the fitting permitting pivotal adjustment of said cup, and a pair of spaced fingers mounted on the last named bolt, a hook on the upper ends of each of said fingers, said hooks enaging and releasably gtpping one arm of a looking jaw pler to hold the plier in the cup.
