To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HEYMAN RosENnnG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New `York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swivel Bench-Stands for Hand-Punches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to hand punches and more particularly to a stand or support for holding a hand punch in position for operation so that the same may be manipulated by one hand while the otherhand is employed in holding the work in proper position.
The obj ect of this invention is to provide a bench stand or holder for a hand punch of common type, the holder or stand being adjustable to support the punch in the desired position and in such manner that the upper handle or lever of the punch may be freely operated to perforate the work which may be inserted between the jaws of the punch by the free hand. n
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a swivel bench stand Awhich may be adjusted into various positions about a vertical axis on a bench and be clamped securely in various adjusted positions for holding a punch as desired over a work bench.
With these and further objects in view as will in part hereinafter become apparent and in part be stated, the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as sub sequently specified and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-n Figure 1 is a side elevation of a swivel bench stand constructed according to the present invention and showing a hand punch of ordinary type mounted in the stand.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the stand khaving the turret turned at right angles to the showing in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the stand in the position shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4f is a longitudinal section through the stand in the position shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a bottom face view of the turret, showing the locking ribs for holding the turret in adjusted position.
AReferring to the drawing by numerals,
10 designates a suitable support, such as they table of a work bench, and 1l the lower. handle of a hand punch of usual construc-y tion, which handle 11 is rigid withk the .frame 12 of the punch and is adapted toV bev engaged by the improved stand for .holding the punch in operative position. The frame l2 is provided with the usual jaws 18 adapt:

The bench `standis provided with a basel 17 which may be of circular form-and may be made relatively tlat and with a circular row of radiating teeth or serrations 18 in its upper face and at the marginal edge vportion of the base. The teeth 18, as shown in Figs. 3, and 4, are formed in the upper face of an annular rib 19 which rises above the upper face of the base 17 to space the teeth 18- above the base. A boss 20 is formed concentric to the base and on the upperside thereof, and the base is provided with a cen# tral opening 21 through which a clamping bolt 22 may pass. The bench 10 is provided with a vertical opening Atherethrough to receive the lower portion of the clamping bolt-22. A bearing washer 23is fitted; about the lower end of the bolt 22 against the under side of the bench 10 and a hand nut 24 is threaded on the lower end of the bolt 22 and is adjustable thereon for binding the washer 23 against the bottom of the bench 10.
The base 17 carries a turret adapted to support the hand punch. The turret is provided with a circular base liange 25 conforming in size to that of the base 17 and provided upon its lower face with radially extending ribs or teeth 26 adapted to fit into the desired corrugations or teeth 18 for holding the turret from turning when adjusted. The flange 25 is provided centrally with a raised hub 27 having a threaded axial opening therethrough which opens through the lower side of the flange 25 and intersects the radial ribs 26. The upper end of the clamping bolt 22 is adapted to be threaded into the hub 27 and to draw the latter downward against the base 17 when the hand nut 24 is tightened. rl`he hub 27 carries at one side an upstanding jaw 28 which, as shown in Fig. 4, is in the form of a flat plate having a longitudinally extending shoulder 29 across its inner face and spaced from the upper end of the jaw 28 to form a recess 30 adapted to receive one side of the ixed handle 11 of a punch. lThe upper edge of the jaw or plate 28 is provided with an inwardly extending iiange or rib 31 adapted to lap over the upper edge of the fixed handle 11,l and the plate or jaw 28 is provided at its upper edge and intermediately with a notch 32 for the reception of the stop 33 Jformed on the lever 14C of the punch, which stop 33 is adapted to strike the exposed upper edge of the handle 11 to determine the limit of movement of the punch point 16.
The turret also carries a movable jaw 34 which is oi similar construction to that of the xed jaw 28 with the exception that the lower edge of the movable jaw is adapted to rest upon the upper face of the base flange 25 and has at its inner face and lower end a notch or recess 35 adapted to receive the upper end of the hub 27. The hub 27 forms a guide for the movable jaw 34 to maintain the same in upright position. A carriage bolt 36 is fitted through suitably formed registering apertures in the iixed and movable jaws 28 and 34 and has a clamping nut 37 which may be arranged at the outer side of the movable jaw 34 for advancing the latter against the fixed jaw 28. The jaws 28 and 34 may be provided with strengthening bosses 38 on their outer sides through which the carriage bolt 36 projects, andthe jaws may also `have vertical ribs 39 at opposite ends which flare outwardly and terminate at the base iiange 25.
It is apparent that by loosening the hand nut 24 the turret may be raised sufficiently to lift the ribs26 out of engagement with the teeth 18 and the turret may then be turned into the desired position. As soon as the nut 24 is tightened against the bottom or the table or bench 10, the turret is locked rigidly in adjusted position. A punch of ordinary construction, such as shown in Fig. 1, may be clamped between the jaws 28 and 34 with the lower arm 110i1 the punch engaging through the recess 30 and resting upon the shoulders 29 of the jaws. The ribs 31 engage'across the top of the handle 11 and hold the handle from rocking between the jaws. The hand lever 14 may be freely raised and lowered over the punch while the latter' is held rigidly in the desired position.
Vhat I claim is A swivel bench stand or hand punches comprising a base, a turret adjustably mounted relative to the base and including a fixed jaw and a movable jaw, said jaws having complementary recesses in their 0pposite faces adapted to receive the fixed handle of a punch and the jaws having recesses intermediate of their ends and at their tops to expose the upper edge of the fixed handle and admit contact of the movable handle therewith to regulate the throw of the punch, and means for clamping said jaws against the fixed handle.
