' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. BECKETT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Somerville, county of Middlesex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Universal Angle-Fixtures, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts in each of the several views.
This invention relates to work holding fixtures of metal working machines which employ either rotary or reciprocating tools, and particularly to a universal fixture adapted to hold the work rigid and secure at any desired angle with respect to the tool operating thereon. A principal object of the invention is to provide an improved fixture of the kind stated wherein provision is made for clamping the work holding platen to the base of the fixture in any position of angular adjustment either vertical or hori- Zontal or both, in a manner so that the en tire fixture constitutes virtually an integral unit of exceptional strength and wherein all possibility of looseness or vibration between the parts is substantially eliminated. A further object is to provide improved means whereby the adjustment of the work holding platen with reference to the base of the fixture in either a vertical or a horizontal plane can be more easily accomplished than heretofore and wherein definite and precise adjustments may be easily and conveniently effected. A still further object is to provide a universal work holding fixture that is simple and easy to manufacture yet strong and reliable in action and capable of long service and of withstanding severe. usage. The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description, and the distinctive features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view partly in elevation and partly in central vertical section showing a fixture constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is ,a transverse vertical section taken at right angles to Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is an end view of the fixture looking from the left in Fig. 1.
The base 10 ofthe fixture may be of suitable form adapted to be fitted on the bed, table or work rest of the machine and is shown as equipped with usual opposite spaced apart pairs of lugs 10 by which it may be clamped to said bed or work rest. This base has fitted centrally therein a short upright stud or post 11 having a head ll seated in a recess of the base and held from turning by a key 12 which is fitted in a slot at the bottom of the base. The base is formed on its top with a circular boss 10 over its major central portioin'tliis boss presenting a plane smooth top surface on which is fitted to slide for angular adjustment the bottom surface of a hollow housing block 1 1. The stud 11 has an upper threaded end 11 ex tending up into the hollow of the housing 1% and this threaded end has fitted thereon a nut 15 which is fitted to turn in a seat 14L at the base of the hollowblock 14:. The top of the nut 15 is formed with gear teeth 16 shown as beveled and adapted to be engaged by a bevel pinion P carried by a handle stem H which is adapted to be insorted through a passage 17 in the housing block provided therefor, said handle stem fitting in said passage and being guided therein as the handle is turned to operate the nut 15 with the pinion P engaged with the teeth 16. Thus the housing block 1d may be clamped rigidly and powerfully to 4 the boss 10 of the base by the setting up of the nut 15 through the instr mentality of the handle H. For determining the angular position of the housing 1a with respect to the base a Vernier plate 18 is fixed to the housing and equipped with graduations adapted for cooperative reading with a series of graduations 19 extending around the periphery of the boss 10". An upright reduced extension 1 1* of thehousing block 1 1 fits between spaced apart cheeks or lugs 20, 20 which are formed with and depend downwardly from the work holding platen or plate 20. A horizontal cylindrical passage or bore 20 is formed through the cheeks 20, 20 and a registering bore 1 1 is formedthrough the housing extension 1-1". Through these bores is fitted a split collet orbushing 21. This collet is expanded by ieans of'tapered nuts 22, 23 engaging correspondingly tapered seats at the respective ends of said collet, these nuts being drawn toward each other for expanding the collet by a bolt 24: passed therethrough, this bolt having its head 24 engaging one of said nuts and having its other end threaded into the other nut as indicated at 2 t The collet 21 is held from turning in the housing extension 14; by a key and the nut 22 may be held from turning so that the bolt 2% may be threaded thereinto by a screw 26 passed through said nut into the collet. For adjusting the platen 20 in a vertical plane and about the collet 21 and bolt 24: as an axis, one of its depending cheeks, shown as the cheek 20 has its lower extremity formed with arcuate gear teeth 27 which are engageable by a pinion P having a centering projection 2) adapted to engage a socket hole in the upright 14. The pinion P is equipped with a handle stem H and when fitted in place is adapted to adjust the platen 20 in an easy and convenient manner to the precise position required whereupon bolt 2r may be tightened up by application of a wrench to the bolt head 24 thus expanding the collet 21 and strongly clamping the platen to the upright 14", it being noted that said collet being of substantial diameter and size it is adapted to obtain a powerful clamping, and gripping action both with reference to the relatively thick and massive cheeks 20 20 of the platen, and with reference to the intermediate housing upright 149. For accurately setting the platen 20 in correct adjustment, a vernier plate 28 is fixed to the base portion of the housing 14: adjacent the semi-cylindrical lower edge 29 of the cheek 20 which edge is graduated as indicated at 29 to cooperate with the graduations on the vernier plate 28.
With the described arrangement the platen 20 may be adjusted in a vertical plane through more than a half circular arc and may then be clamped'strongly as described to the housing making the platen virtually an integral unit with the housing upright so far as rigidity and strength is concerned, while in like manner the housing 1 may be clamped to the base in any angular adjustment by means of the stud 11 and nut 15, both of which by virtue of the described arrangement of cooperative parts may be relatively strong and massive. I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention. 1

2. A work holding fixture, comprising base equipped with an upstanding stud, a housing fitted to swivel on said stud, a nut fitted to turn in a seat in said housing and threaded on said stud,'said nut having gear teeth on a face thereof and said housing having a bore adapted to receive and guide a tool for engaging said teeth and turning said nut, said housing having a bore therethrough at right angles to said stud, an expanding collet fitted in said bore with means for expanding the same, and a work holding platen having spaced apart depending cheeks fitted to swivel on the ends of said collet.
3. A work holding fixture, comprising a base equipped with an upstanding stud, a housing fitted to swivel on said stud,,a nut fitted to turn in a seat in said housing and threaded on said stud, said nut having gear teeth on a face thereof and said housing having a bore adapted to receive and guide a tool for engaging said teeth and turning said nut, said housing having a here therethrough at right angles to said stud, an ex panding collet fitted in said bore with means for expanding the same, and a work holding platen having spaced apart depending cheeks fitted to swivel on the ends of said collet, one of said cheeks having a gear segment formed thereon concentric with said collet and adapted to be engaged by a pinion tool for angularly adjusting said platen.

A workholding fixture, comprising a base, a housing mounted to swivel thereon and equipped with means for clamping the same to said base, said housing having an upright extension with a bore therethrough at right angles to its axis of adjustment, an expanding collet fitted in said bore equipped with cone nuts, and a draw bolt, a work holding platen equipped with depending cheeks fitted to turn on the ends of said col let, one of said cheeks bearing a gear seg ment concentric with said draw bolt and the other cheek equipped with vernier graduations for the purpose stated.
