7 V the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to that class of gages known as mitering saw gages.
An object is to provide a gage of this character which, while comparatively simple and cheap to manufacture, is nevertheless, very accurate, r1g1d and durable in use.
Another object is to provide such a gage in which the supportand body are arranged to be located at a distance from the saw, while the fence may be. adjusted into as close proximity to the latter as may be requisite or desirable.
Another object is to provide certain improvements in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts, whereby the above named and other advantages may be efiectively attained. V
A practical embodiment of my invention I is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which, 7

Fig. 3 represents a section taken in the plane of the line III, III of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows. The machine table. is denoted by 1 and the saw by 2. The table is provided with the customary groove 3 for slidably receiving the tongue 4 which supports the gage. In the present instance, the groove 3 and tongue 4 are located a considerable dlstan'ce away from the saw 2, and it will be understood that the tongue 1, carrying the gage, is arranged to be moved in the groove 3, for the purpose of alternately feeding the work and withdrawing the gage to its initial position, in the usual manner.
The gage comprises a body which has an inner bar 5 and an annular periphery 6. The bar 5 is fixed to the tongue 1, by means of screws 7.
A ring 8 is fitted to be angularly' adusted on the periphery of the body 5, 6, and means are provided for locking the body and ring together in any-desiredad- ]11St111611t. This means is arranged as follows:
A narrow, annular rim 9 is fashioned on the periphery 6 of the body near the upper part thereof. A wide annular rim '10 is formed on the inner periphery of the ring 8, The two rims 9 and 10 overlap, and the clrcumference of the rim 9 slidably engages the ring 8 while the circumference of the rim 1O similarly engages the periphery 6 of the body. A pair of bolts 11 are mounted in the part 6 of the body, parallel to the I axis thereof when considered as a circle, each'of which bolts has a flat head 12 which is fitted to overlap and engage the lower edge or face of the rim 10. Thumb nuts 13 are provided for tightening the bolts 11, and it will be seen that such tightening clamps the rim 10 on the inner periphery of the ring 8, between the rim 9 onv the outer circumference of the part 6 and the heads 12 of the bolts 11, thus firmly locking the body 5, 6, and ring 8 together. A scale 14, preferably graduatedin de- I grees, is engraved upon the upper-face of the ring 8, while a registering line or indicatorfmark 15 is suitably inscribed on the upper face of the part 6. This scale is designed to be used for the purpose of pre determining the angularity ofjthe fence of the gage, with respect to the tongue 1.

tailed or keystone-shaped headslt), fitted'to slidably seat in similarly shaped grooves 20, extending longitudinally of the fence 21. Thumb nuts 22 are threaded on to the bolts 18, for the purpose of tightening up the same and thereby locking the fence 21 in any desired position on the seat 16. As
additional means for properly seating the bolts 18 and retaining the fence 21 in en.- gagement with the seat 16, I have provided dowels 23 which project from the heads 19 and enter sockets in the seat 16; together with expansion coil springs 24: which surround the stems of the bolts 18 and abut the seat 16 and the nuts 22, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The forward end of the fence 21 is mitered or backed-off, as shown at 25, to keep it out of reach of the saw when the gage is operated at certain angles.
I believe that the operation of the device will be perfectly clear to anyone having a knowledge of the industry, from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the drawings, but I may add that the gage may be set at the desired degree of angle for a cut by loosening the nuts 13 and turning the ring 8, together with its seat 16 and fence 25, upon the body 5, 6, until the line on the scale 14:, marked with the desired angle, is in register with the inclicating mark 15. In this position the ring 8 and parts carried thereby may be locked by setting up on the thumb nuts 13. The
thumb nuts 22 may then be loosened and the fence 21 slid toward the saw until it is sufiiciently close thereto to firmly support the work. In such position it may be locked by tightening the thumb nuts 22. The work is now placed against the fence, and fed to the saw by sliding the tongue 4 along in the groove in a well known manner.
I desire it to be understood that various changes may be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; and hence I do not intend to be limited to the specific details herein shown and described except as they may be included in the claims.
WVhat I claim is:
l. A mitering saw gage, comprising a body, a fence carrying ring mounted on the periphery thereof for angular adjustment thereon, circumferential rims on the body and ring, and a bolt carried by the one and having a head fitted to overlap the rim on the other, whereby the tightening of the bolt will clamp the rim on the one between the rim on the other and the head of the bolt, for temporarily locking the two together.
2. A mitering saw gage, comprising a body, a fence carrying ring mounted on the periphery thereof for regular adjustment thereon, circumferential rims on the body and ring, and bolts carried by the one and having heads fitted to overlap the rim on the other, whereby the tightening of the bolts will clamp the rim on the one between the rim on the other and the heads of the bolts, for temporarily locking the two together.
3. A mitering saw gage, comprising a body, a fence carrying ring mounted on the periphery thereof for angular adjustment thereon, a rim on the periphery of the body, a rim on the inner circumference of the ring, and a bolt disposed in the body parallel to the axis thereof and having a head fitted to overlap the rim on the ring, whereby the tightening of the bolt will clamp the rim on the ring between the rim on the body and the head of the bolt, for temporarily looking the body and ring together.
a. A mitering saw gage, comprising a body, a fence carrying ring mounted on the periphery thereof for angular adjustment thereon, a rim on the periphery of the body, a rim on the inner circumference of the ring and bolts disposed in the body parallel to the aXis thereof and having heads fitted to overlap the rim on the ring, whereby the tightening of the bolts will clamp the rim on the ring between the rim on the body and the heads of the bolts, for temporarily locking the body and ring together.
5, A mitering saw gage, comprising a body having a circular portion, a fence carrying ring mounted on the outer periphery of the said portion for angular adjustment thereon, an outwardly projecting rim on the said portion of the body, an inwardly projecting rim 0n the ring, the said rims overlapping each other, an element carried by the said portion of the body overlapping the rim 011 the ring at the side thereof opposite to the rim on the body portion, and means for drawing the said element toward the rim on the body portion for clamping the rim on the ring therebetween and locking the body and ring together.
