Abstract

704,371. Scaffolding clamps. HAWES, A. H. Oct. 31, 1952 [Nov. 8, 1951], No. 26138/51. Class 20 (2) A clamp for coupling a pair of scaffold tubes side by side comprises a pair of hinged jaws 10, 11, Figs. 1, 2, providing therebetween an elongated opening to receive the scaffold tubes so that the jaws clamp opposite sides of the tubes with each jaw in engagement with both tubes, a nut 18 being pivoted to one jaw 10 and a clamping bolt 21 in threaded, engagement with the nut engaging with its head 22 the other jaw 11 to clamp the jaws on the tubes when the bolt is tightened, the arrangement being such that by loosening the bolt, it can be disengaged from the jaw 11 and swung with the nut 18 into a position to permit the two jaws to be hinged apart. Each jaw is formed from a pair of strip metal members spaced apart at the hinge by the hinge pin 15 and at the other ends by a spacer pin 27 and the nut 18 respectively. The nut is formed with a sleeve 28 to protect the thread of the bolt 21 against dirt and corrosion, the free end of the bolt being riveted over to prevent complete withdrawal from the nut. The bolt head 22 engages the outer edges of the strips forming the jaw 11 and behind lugs 26 on the ends of the strips. Specification 581,429 is referred to.
