694,682. Fishing tongs. JOHANSSON, S. G. May 21, 1951, No. 11832/51. Class 48. A fishing tongs or grapple comprises a pole or handle 1 provided with a head 2 upon which a pair of toothed jaws 4 are each mounted on a pivot 3, the inner or rearward end of each jaw beyond the pivot being formed with a cam extension 5 to engage a lateral abutment or shoulder 6 on each side of the inner end of a bolt 7 carrying a nut 10 beneath which a helical spring 8 is located within the handle, the other end of the spring being in abutment with a stop 9 on the head, the action of the spring being such that the abutments or shoulders 6 of the bolt bear upon the respective cams 5 in a direction to close the jaws. A transverse stay comprising two links 11, 12 pivoted to the respective jaws 4 and connected together centrally by a knee joint 13 is adapted to maintain the jaws open when the pivot 16 is below the dead centre line 17 of the stay. When, however, the device is pushed upon, or against, a fish so that the pivot 16 of the transverse stay is moved upwardly above the dead centre line, the jaws.snap into a closed position. Re-opening of the jaws is effected by a lever 23 pivoted in the head 2 and bifurcated at its inner end 22 to engage both the projecting members 6 of the bolt 7 and force the jaws open. Lugs 14 and 15 at the pivoted ends of the links 11, 12 enable angular adjustment of the links to be made by a screw 20 through lug 14. Teeth 21 are provided on the jaws 4 and links 11, 12 of the transverse stay.
