A draught appliance for steam locomotives having a chimney of elongated cross-section and including a divergent diffuser portion and one or more exhaust nozzle openings is characterized by the fact that the angle formed between the longitudinal central plane of the chimney and straight lines drawn in transverse planes at 90 degrees to the aforesaid plane and connecting the edge of the exhaust nozzle opening with any point of the chimney, decreases with growing distance of the point of contact from the plane of the nozzle opening only until said distance reaches a minimum of 1“ times or a maximum of twice the distance between the narrowest section of the chimney and the plane of the nozzle opening and that the said angle increases again with further growing distance of the point of contact from the plane of the nozzle opening. The diffuser portion is formed as a conoidal body characterized in that the relation i/d-1 for the diffuser lies between 6 and 7 to increase the diffuser losses by a controlled amount. In accordance with the principals of the invention the relationship a/c-b lays between 6 and 6.5. These proportions have the effect of minimising the reduction in the air supply occurring whenever the flow resistance through the fire bed increases as any diminution of the flow will bring about a notable compensatory action due to diminishing frictional and diffuser losses.
