Abstract
In a soaking pit furnace in which the cover 7 carried by an overhead carriage 9 is permanently disposed 1-3 inches above the furnace rim, sections of pipe 16 formed with longitudinal slits are disposed below peripheral cover girders 12, whereby curtains of air or other gas are projected downwardly and inwardly towards said furnace rim. A blower 26 is mounted on the carriage 9 and connected by a flexible bellows 29 to a distributer box 24 from which ducts 23 extend towards dowacomers 22 connected to pipes 16 by junction boxes 21. The latter are formed with air openings and individual control valves are disposed at the end of each duct 23. The pipe sections 16 may be rotatably mounted and the width of the slits may be adjusted by diametral bolts with nuts at one end. With an internal pressure of 0À15 inch of water at the gap, it was possible to preserve a positive pressure to the bottom of the furnace, without emission of flame at the gap.
