Abstract
A Ti-base alloy has the following composition: Be 0.5-1%; Mo 0.25-2% and/or Si 0.25-2%; Ti and impurities, the remainder. The alloy is heat treated to produce a hard surface with a softer core by liquid quenching from a temperature between 875 DEG and 1200 DEG C. The alloy may then be tempered by reheating to a temperature below 800 DEG C. According to the Provisional Specification the alloy has the composition: Be 0.1-2.5%; Mo 0.1-2.5%; Ti and impurities the remainder.
