929,804. Thermonuclear apparatus. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 19, 1961 [Sept. 21, 1960], No. 32437/60. Class 39 (4). In apparatus of the kind in which an electrical discharge is produced around a toroidal container formed with inner and outer walls, the outer wall 2 having sufficient conductivity to allow stabilizing currents to flow and the inner wall 1 having sufficient resistance to avoid short-circuiting the discharge E.M.F., insulating cooling liquid is circulated through the space between the inner and outer walls, the insulating liquid being at a static pressure intermediate between that of the discharge space and that of the atmosphere. The liquid is preferably an insulating oil having a low vapour pressure. In the drawing the liquid is insulated through the space by a pump 11 and passes through a cooler 13. A reservoir 15 is maintained under vacuum so that there is little pressure difference across the weak walls of the thin metal liner 1.
