Abstract

932,175. Stuffing-box substitutes. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. Jan. 19, 1961 [Jan. 21, 1960], No. 2252/61. Class 122 (5). A rotating vertical shaft 1 which enters a vacuum chamber is sealed off by a shaft lead-in tubular member 4 fixed as by screw-threads 3 to the wall of the chamber and a bell member 2 engaging in spaced relation over the member 4 and having its rim dipping in sealing liquid 8 contained in an annular cup 7, the member 4 being hollow and provided with inlet and outlet 5, 6 for circulation of coolant therein. The member 2 is integral with the shaft and the cup 7 is formed as an extension of the member 4. The upper end of the shaft is sealed by a stuffing-box 10 to which sealing liquid is supplied at 11, excess liquid falling into the cup 7. In operation, volatile components of the sealing liquid contained in the cup 7 condense on the cooled member 4 and flow back in the cup again. Excess liquid may be drawn off from the cup through an outlet 9 by a pump.
