Abstract

Leakage - preventing devices; arrangement of bearings.- A centrifugal pump for corrosive fluids has a vertical axis, and its bearings are protected from the fluids by the use of a shaft 7 of adequate length, and by an openwork spacing part 11 which separates the pump itself from the bearings. The impeller 4 is carried by the shaft 7 and has labyrinths 5, 6; any liquid which passes the labyrinth 6 escapes by the overflow opening 9. A perforated cylinder 8 collects any leakage round the shaft. The openwork portion 11 of the casing has glands 13, 14, the former 13 shutting off the pump part of the casing and the latter 13 shutting off the bearings 16, 17, 18. The pump is arranged so that in normal working the liquid in the barrel does not rise above the level 15 and therefore does not reach the gland 13. With the apparatus arranged so that the liquid is at the level 15 the pump is kept primed.
