Abstract

911,557. Stuffing-box substitutes. PFAUDLER-WERKE A.G. Aug. 25, 1960 [Aug. 26, 1959], No. 29364/60. Class 122 (5). The agitator shaft 3 of a stirring tank 1 is sealed where it passes through the bottom of the tank by a mechanical seal 8, 9 and the introduction into a space provided above this seal of a barrier medium which is inert to the liquid being treated in the tank. The shaft is surrounded by a tube 5 and by a cap 4 which is secured to the shaft, the annular gaps 12, 13 being filled with the barrier medium in the form of a liquid or gas introduced through a tube 10. The cap 4 and tube 5 may be of chemically-resistant material such as polytetrafluoroethylene.
