Abstract

533,384. Stuffing-box substitutes. FOWLER, J., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Sept. 27, 1939, No. 26755. [Class 122 (v) ] A liquid seal, applicable to the actuating shaft of a tapchanging apparatus for an oil-immersed electric transformer, comprises a cup 2 and a skirt 3 dipping into the cup and normally providing a U-space within the cup for the sealing liquid e.g. mercury. For high pressures or for transport the cup and skirt or associated parts are forced into contact by a nut 6 held against axial movement and causing the cup to rise on rotating the screw. A packing 7 is provided in the cup or in a position to contact with the top of the cup wall. In a modification, a depending cup extends into a double-walled vessel, a sealing gasket being provided either at the top or bottom.
