Abstract

<PICT:0595526/III/1> Apparatus for stirring or agitating liquids under pressures substantially below atmospheric, e.g., vacuum distillation apparatus, comprises a vacuum vessel, stirring or agitating means therein, and a mercury seal through which said means passes into the vessel and in which the mercury may rise so as to counterbalance the atmospheric pressure. A stirrer is mounted on a rotary shaft 5 which passes into a vacuum vessel 1 through a mercury seal comprising a mercury bath 10 affixed to the lid 2; a fixed tube 8 mounted concentrically with the shaft 5, and a tube 9 surrounding and rotatable with the shaft 5. Multiple mercury seals may, alternatively, be provided.
