652,257. Gauges. HIRES, CASTNER, & HARRIS, Inc. Nov. 13, 1947, No. 30207. Convention date, Nov. 23, 1946. [Class 106 (ii)] The deflection of the flexible cover or wall 21 of a food container or the like 20 is determined or compared with a standard in order to obtain a knowledge of the pressure inside the container by apparatus comprising a flexible diaphragm 12 which is applied to the wall 21 to conform to the contour thereof, and a reservoir of liquid extending from the diaphragm into a measuring column. As shown, mercury in the reservoir extends up a tube 23 into which projects a pin 36 carried by an adjustment screw 33 forming part of an electric circuit. If the degree of vacuum inside the container 20 is unsatisfactory the mercury will be forced up the tube to complete the electric circuit to ring a bell, light a lamp, or operate a machine, through solenoids or relays, to reject the container. In a modification, the tube 23 is transparent and graduated, and only a visual indication of the degree of vacuum is obtainable.
