Abstract
742,020. Barometers. HINTON, A. G. Sept. 10, 1954 [July 2, 1953], No. 18295/53. Class 106 (2). A barometer comprises a deformable capsule &c. filled with liquid and connected to a transparent tube, means being provided to compensate for changes of ambient temperature. A capsule 3 and tube 4 may be formed integrally from glass and a bulb 5 is provided, the expansion of the gas in which, due to rise in temperature compensates for the effect of temperature on the liquid. In alternative forms the capsule may be replaced by a bellows, the tube terminating in a bulb, or the capsule may be of material having a coefficient of expansion permitting it to compensate for the expansion of the liquid. In the latter case the liquid may be mercury and the upper end of the tube may enclose a near vacuum.
