Abstract
653,934. Electron microscopes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL, Ltd. July 5, 1948, No. 18002. Convention date, July 8, 1947. [Class 39 (i)] In an electron microscope which comprises a space for the object communicating with the vacuum space through two beam apertures 3, the object space is sealed by the object holder 4 or by a further member 10 upon withdrawal of the holder. In the preferred form, a metal tube portion 1 carries a metal partition 2 provided with beam apertures 3, holder 4 passing through packing 9 and sealing ring 8, and a sealing member 10 adapted to engage, against a spring 5, with an abutment 14 which is screwed into the tube 1. Removal of the holder permits sealing by the member 10 at the edge 16. A groove 11 in the holder allows escape of air upon insertion, and the pressure of the spring 5 can be balanced by tightening the packing 9. The position of the object can be indicated by a marking on the knob 7.
