Abstract

682,530. X-ray apparatus. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Dec. 1, 1950 [Feb. 23, 1950], No. 4721/50. Class 98 (i). [Also in Group XL (a)] Apparatus for introducing specimens into the vacuum chamber of an electron microscope or diffraction camera comprises a rod and tube slidably arranged in an opening in the wall of the chamber, the rod being formed at its inner end with holes, and an extension of the same diameter of the tube allowing the holes to be closed by the tube whilst the assembly is withdrawn to a position in which the extension seals the chamber and the tube slid outwardly to expose the holes for positioning of the specimens. The rod 5 with three specimen holes 7 and an enlarged end 9 slides within a tube 6 which is also an accurate sliding fit in a sleeve 10 formed integrally with a beam member 14. A gland seal 11 and nut 12 engage the end of the sleeve 10 and a locking screw 18 clamps the tube 6 in any.position. A bellows 16 and gland 17 seal the wall of the tube and the tube 10. The rod 5 is vacuum sealed by a gland seal 20 and the head 25 of the rod carries a notched rod 26 which extends into the body of the seal retaining nut 23, a spring-pressed catch 27 engaging the notches 28, 29. The notches 28 determine the selective positioning of the specimen holes 7 and the notch 29 determines the point at which the end 9 is flush with the tube 6 when the latter is withdrawn for specimen changing. A split ring 31 in a recess 30 abuts the inner end 32 of the sleeve 10 when the tube 6 is withdrawn and prevents further movement of the rod 5 in that direction, and by withdrawing the catch 27, the tube 6 can be moved further to expose the holes 7. A scanning movement of the specimen with the chamber is provided by means of the beam 14 which is supported on pins 35 on the ends of screw-threaded rods 33. The pins 35 engage in notches 36 which prevent rotation. The threads 37 of the rods 33 carry nuts 38 with gear-teeth 39 which are driven by worm 40 and raise or lower the beam 14 against the action of tension springs 41, and provide the necessary tilt for a scanning movement of the specimens or a fine adjustment of the position of the holes 7. The locking screw 18 may be released to allow rotation of the tube 6 and rod 5 for stereoscopic photography. The angle of rotation is measured by a pointer and scale (not shown).
