Abstract

726,021. X-ray tubes. HORIZONS, Inc. May 27, 1953 [June 3, 1952], No. 14777/53. Class 39 (1). An X-ray tube has a rotary anode 19 which is cooled by circulation of water in the interior thereof, said anode being supported on a frame forming part of the side wall of the tube envelope, the anode driving mechanism being mounted on the same frame. The anode-supporting frame 6 also serves as a cover plate to the main tube envelope 5, with a soft sealing gasket 10. Eccentrically disposed on frame 6 is an inwardly extending annular part 11 carrying two rings 12 and 12'. Parts 11, 12 and 12' bear through greased sealing rings 13 against sleeve 15, which has an integral flange 17 at one end, and a threaded flange 16 at the other. The anode proper is a cylindrical drum 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, carried by an integral support sleeve 25. On the lower end of sleeve 25 is screwed a driving cap 26, which can be tightened so as to compress a rubber sealing gasket 28 between flange 16 and the part 24 of the anode. The rotating anode is driven from a pulley 34 and a gear train 30, 31, all mounted directly on the frame 6, the gears engaging with the driving cap 26. The water connections are provided by a stationary union consisting ot a sleeve 39 with a tube 40 inside it. The cooling water enters through line 37, circulates inside the anode drum, and discharges through line 38. A packing gland 45 forms a water seal between the sleeve 39 and the stationary parts. The design is suitable for a demountable tube; anode shells 20 of different materials may be used for obtaining different X-ray characteristics, or the shell may comprise segments of different metals. A further feature is that the anode drive, and water supply lines, are all well clear of the peripheral windows 36.
