Abstract

A liquid for use as a seal between relatively moving parts containing gaseous nuclear reaction fission products comprises a suspension of active carbon in a mixture of alcohol and water. The liquid adsorbs or dissolves the fission products without being decomposed by the radioactivity. In closed circuit thermal power plant using gas from a nuclear reactor, the shaft of a compressor is sealed by the liquid which is circulated to a vessel for removing gas and then back to the seal (see Group XXVI]
