Abstract

Transformers. - Excessive increase in pressure of the gas above the oil in transformer, switch, and like tanks is avoided by providing material, such as coke, charcoal, or a liquid that will reversibly absorb or give off the gas under changes of pressure, the material being disposed in a sealed expansion space in or communicating with the tank. The material 7 may be disposed in a chamber 6 communicating either with a space above the oil level in the tank or with a space 8 formed by a partition 9 in a tank 2 that is completely filled with oil. In the latter case, where the gas does not come into contact with the copper parts of the apparatus, a gas such as ammonia may be used. Otherwise, inert gases such as carbon-dioxide or nitrogen are employed. Alternatively, a liquid may be provided in the chamber 6, the space between this liquid and the oil being filled with the vapour of the former. Provision may be made for cooling the material 7, the transformer cooling system being utilized for this purpose if desired.
