Abstract

163,090. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Feb. 3, 1920. Transformers.-Means for cooling an electrical apparatus having a core carrying windings, such as a transformer or a reactance, comprise a tank or container embracing the core containing a liquid which is in a state of ebullition during the operation of the apparatus. In the arrangement shown, the core 10 of a shell-type transformer is surrounded by an elongated tank 20, the ends of which are drawn together by a turnbuckle 21. Water or other liquid is admitted to the tank through an inlet 23, and an outlet 24 is provided at the top of the tank for the escape of vapour. The water may be caused to evaporate under reduced pressure if necessary, or the windings may be insulated with inorganic materials such as mica or asbestos in order that they may be operated at a temperature above 100‹ Centigrade. In a modification an additional tank, connected with the tank 20, is provided inside the core.
