Abstract

693,448. Transformers. BRITISH ELECTRIC TRANSFORMER CO., Ltd. Oct. 9, 1951 [Oct. 10, 1950], No. 24733/50. Class 38 (ii). An oil-insulated transformer comprises an oil-tight transformer tank 1 and an auxiliary tank 4 so connected by piping 2, 3 that a continuous body of oil fills the tank 1 and partially fills the auxiliary tank 4, together with a sealing device, such as a simulated " U " tube 7, 8, 9, for maintaining a layer of inert gas between any oil in the auxiliary tank 4 and the atmosphere, the device being vented to the atmosphere and serving to prevent any contact between the inert gas and the atmosphere. The " U " tube comprises two vessels 7. 9 joined near their lower levels by piping 8, the inert gas, such as nitrogen, being located between the level of the liquid in the vessel 7 and the level of the oil in the tank 4. The piping 2, 3 is so dimensioned that convection currents of oil therethrough do not occur, thus the nitrogen does not become heated. An inherent factor of the design is that the volume of liquid in both the vessels 7, 9 and the tank 4 must be at least as great as the volume increase of oil in the tank 1 during operation. A gasoperated relay 5 may be provided.
