928,399. Semi-conductor devices. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 11, 1961 [May 12, 1960], No. 16830/60. Class 37. [Also in Group XL (b)] A crystal valve to be connected in a coaxial line has means for tuning the cavity containing the cat's whisker and the crystal independently of the setting of the cat's whisker contact with the crystal. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the crystal 3 is supported on a conductor 2 itself supported in a glass disc 6 which forms a glass-to-metal seal with a metal collar 4 soldered to the casing 1. The cat's whisker is carried on a plug 9 which may be adjusted to or from the crystal in a barrier member 11 and then clamped in position possibly by being made a force fit. The barrier also carries plugs 13 of metal or dielectric material coupled together at 14 so as to be adjustable together to tune the cavity. A further arrangement (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) uses screwed plugs while in the arrangement of Figs. 5 and 6, not shown, a U-shaped member carries the cat's whisker at the bottom of the U while a further U inverted with respect to the first and at right angles to it tunes the cavity when its limbs are advanced into it. In the arrangement of Fig. 7 tuning is effected by plugs 24 which are adjusted by a screw 27. This deforms a diaphragm 28 carrying the plug and sealing the cavity and the diaphragm remains permanently deformed. In the arrangement of Figs. 8 and 9 the crystal is mounted on a plug 30 the connection of which is shown in Fig. 9. The plug is adjustable and is then clamped against a resilient strip 33 by grub screw 32. This strip may be adjusted to tune the cavity by flexing it about a longitudinal axis.
