Abstract

Apparatus for hydraulically or pneumatically operating the valve closure member 4, Fig. 1, of a sliding gate valve 1, comprises an operating stem 16 connected at its upper end to a double - acting piston 18 slidable in a cylinder 19 and formed at its lower end with a sleeve 15 having helical slots 13, engaging projecting lugs 12 on a nut member 11 screwed on the valve spindle 7. A hammer bolt connection 6 secures the spindle 7 against relative rotation with respect to the closure member 4. The lugs 12 also engage L-shaped slots 14 in a sleeve 17 secured to the cylinder 19. Sleeves 15 and 17 are secured against relative rotation by means of an axial groove in the sleeve 15 and at least one bolt 24 passing through the sleeve 17. When the valve is in its open position with the piston 18 at the top of the cylinder 19, the lugs 12 are located at the lower ends of the slots 13 (see Fig. 3a) and upper ends of the slots 14. Operating air or liquid admitted above the piston 18 urges the piston, sleeve 15, and nut 11 downwards so that the lugs 12 move down the slots 14 until the bends therein are reached. The "horizontal" limbs of the slots 14 are located at an angle of slightly greater than 90 degrees with respect to the vertical limbs so that on further downward movement of the piston 18 the nut 11 is rotated and the closure member urged firmly into engagement with its seats. The stem 16 may be extended above the piston and out through the top cover of the cylinder for manual actuation of the valve. To indicate the position of the closure member 4, the operating stem 16 is formed with a chamber 28, Fig. 4, having a length equal to the length of a tube 29 sealingly passing through the piston. The tube 29 is connected by pipe 30 to a cylinder 31 in which slides a spring-loaded piston 32 connected to a pointer 34 moving over a graduated scale 35. The chamber 28, tube 29, pipe 30 and cylinder 31 are filled with a non-compressable liquid, e.g. oil.
