Abstract

840,217. Engine valve gear. YOUNG, D. H. Sept. 9, 1958, No. 28908/58. Class 122 (2). [Also in Group XXVIII] A valve means 9, Fig. 1, for controlling the flow of pressure fluid through the outlet 8 of a piston-and-cylinder dispensing-apparatus comprises a valve stem 16<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, engaged by a snap-action spring means 27 operated by a rod 16, the rod and piston 5 having two pairs of co-operating abutments which, when the piston is moved to one or other of two predetermined positions, either open or close the valve. As shown applied to an apparatus for dispensing lubricant, the valve stem 16<SP>1</SP> is formed integrally with the rod 16 and is slidably mounted in a sleeve 18 of polytetrafluoroethylene, which is retained in a bore in the base-plate of the cylinder 1 by a screwed plug 19 ; the valve stem may be formed separate from the rod. The spring means 27, which is of rectangular shape, is secured at its outer ends to the base-plate and.engages, at its inner ends, with a groove 28 formed in the valve stem; the spring may be backed by a plate engaging with a groove 29 in the stem. The opposite end of the rod 16 is provided with a collar 16<SP>11</SP> which moves within a bore formed in the piston and rod 4 thereby providing a lost-motion device. In operation, with the valve in the closed position, pressurized fluid, such as steam, is fed through an inlet 7 and thereby moves the piston 5 against the action of a return-spring 24 until a step 36 on the piston abuts the.collar 16<SP>11</SP> and opens the valve 9 allowing the steam to pass through the outlet 8 into a steam trap 22. Under the action of the spring 24, the piston is moved in the opposite direction and forces the steam in the cylinder 1 through the outlet 8 via ports 20, 21 in the valve stem until, at the end of its stroke, the bottom of the bore in the piston-rod 4 contacts the end of the rod 16, thereby closing the valve. The piston-rod 4 may be adapted to open or close the blow-off valve of a steam boiler.
