Abstract

[Also in Division G3] A pilot-operated valve suitable for controlling the output of an oil well is adapted to close in response to predetermined high or low pressures at its downstream side. As shown, the valve has an inlet 13, outlet 16, main closure member MV integral with a piston 21 working in a cylinder 20, and a pilot valve PV controlling communication between the space above piston 21 and pilot chamber 33, the latter communicating with the valve inlet via passages 40-42 and 44. Outlet pressure acts via passage 118 on one side of a piston (117, Fig. 4, not shown) working in a cylinder (116), the piston serving to transmit the outlet pressure to a chamber 82 (Fig. 2b) via a fluid link in a line 82a. Fluid pressure in chamber 82 acts on opposed pistons 83, 86 which contact respective spring-loaded sleeves 66, 98 having lost motion connections with the pilot valve stem 60. The pilot valve is pressurebalanced in its closed position and if the outlet pressure falls below a predetermined value, spring 68 moves sleeve 66 upwardly to unseat the pilot valve to close the main valve. After its initial unseating, the pilot valve is no longer pressure balanced and is urged rapidly upwardly to abut a guide 35. The sleeve 66 continues its upward movement until it abuts a surface 81 of housing 77. If, on the other hand, the outlet pressure rises above a predetermined value, piston 86 moves upwardly against spring 93 to cause sleeve 98 to engage stem 60 to unseat the pilot valve. As before, after the pilot valve is initially unseated it is urged rapidly upwardly by pressure in chamber 33 to abut guide 35, and the sleeve 98 continues its upward movement until it abuts a flange 101. To reset the valve, valves 130 and 131 are respectively closed and opened. The pilot valve may be opened manually by rotating a cap 105 having a threaded connection with a stationary plug 102. In Fig. 6, not shown, sleeve 98 &c. is removed so that the valve will only close in response to a predetermined low pressure. In Fig. 7, not shown, the outlet pressure is sensed downstream of a choke and is transmitted to chamber 82 either directly or via the fluid link comprising piston (117) and line 82a.
