Abstract

925,341. Oil-break switches. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. Aug. 30, 1961 [Sept. 1, 1960], No. 31198/61. Class 38 (5). In a liquid-filled circuit-breaker the interrupter unit comprises a chamber enclosing the engaged resiliently-mounted fixed contact and co-operating moving contact which is solidly connected to a cylinder surrounding the chamber and movable with the contact so as to drive the liquid, preferably oil, into the contact chamber during contact opening movement. As shown, the nozzle-shaped moving contact 4 is connected by a cylinder 2a and a rod 13 to a cylinder 2 which surrounds the contact chamber 3 and co-operates with a body part 1 which acts as a fixed piston in the movable cylinder 2. During a circuit-breaking operation the contact 4 and cylinder 2 are moved down (as shown on the left-hand side of the Figure) by a rod 8 and a valve formed by the cylinder end 10 and a ring 6 is closed so that oil is driven along the arrowed path shown through the arc formed between contacts 2, 5. During a closing operation the valve 6, 10 is open, to an extent limited by stops 14, to allow oil to flow back into the cylinder 2.
