Abstract

554,982. Liquid-blast switches. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., and WILD, R. W. Jan. 23, 1942, No. 979. [Class 38 (v)] In a switch having means for drawing out the opening-arc to a predetermined limited length such that it is confined within a laterally-vented enclosure, a piston is positively actuated by the contact-opening mechanism to inject liquid into the enclosure after the arc has been drawn to that length. The enclosure may be as described in one or other of Specifications 435,250, 435,308, 452,146, and 460,219. In Fig. 1, the arc drawn between the fixed and movable contacts B, C is limited by a fixed auxiliary contact B<SP>1</SP> which C continuously engages, and when this point is reached, the piston C<SP>3</SP> on the movable contact closes a port D<SP>2</SP> in the cylinder D so that further movement of C injects liquid into the enclosure through a duct C<SP>4</SP>. In reclosing, the cylinder D is refilled initially through a valve-controlled port D<SP>3</SP>, and a seep hole D' is provided in the piston. In Fig. 2, the moving contact J terminates in a cylinder J' communicating through ports J<SP>6</SP>, J' and passages J<SP>4</SP>, J<SP>5</SP> with a duct J<SP>1</SP>, but only when a normallyclosed, spring-controlled slide valve K is opened. When the rod L' is raised, the liquid entrapped in the cylinder J<SP>3</SP> couples the piston L and contact J, whereby the rod and contact move together. Near the end of travel of contact J, valve K engages flange M<SP>1</SP>, and opens and by further movement of L, L', the liquid is injected through the contact J. A port J<SP>8</SP> between the cylinder J<SP>3</SP> and outer casing erables the reverse movements to take place in closing.
