Abstract

927,548. Liquid-blast switches. FORGES ET ATELIERS DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES DE JEUMONT. Aug. 4, 1961 [Aug. 12, 1960], No. 28442/61. Class 38 (5). In a small oil volume circuit-breaker having an intercepting device providing cross-jet and axial-flow arc extinction a plurality of valves are arranged to be operated at different oil pressures so as to provide pressure waves in the intercepting device in dependence upon the arcing conditions. As shown, the circuitbreaker has an intercepter chamber 2 including cross-jet and axial-flow arc extinction elements 5, 6. Valves 12 and 14 are arranged to close at different pressures since the latter is smaller and is spaced by passages 13, 3A at a greater distance from the contacts 3, 4. After the valve 14 is closed, by higher pressure, a valve 15, on which the valve 14 is mounted, is opened by increased pressure against the bias of an adjustable spring 16. The elements 5 are shaped as shown in Fig. 2 so as to shield the oil in areas 5A from arc radiation. The moving contact 4 has a hollow bore 4A including a non-return valve 17 so as to provide an axial stream of oil on low current arc interruption. The moving contact 4 is controlled by an hydraulic ram device 10 having a piston 20 with a conical extension 21 which enters a duct 22 with decreasing clearance to retard the final opening movement. To damp the final closing movement a piston 26 is moved by the piston 20 against the bias of a spring 26A and an oil escape slot 9A in the operating shaft 9 is tapered at its lower end to reduce the oil flow from the space above the pistons 20, 26.
