Abstract
798,011. Gas blast switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Aug. 16, 1955 [Aug. 19, 1954], No. 24160/54. Class 38 (5). In a gas blast switch, the valve 14 controlling the gas blast is caused to open by the initial reverse movement of the interrupter contact 16, 17 during the opening operation of the switch, the valve reclosing after a predetermined open period. In the arrangement shown, when an operating shaft 25 is turned, overset toggle links 24, 23 cause the moving contact 47 to make a slight initial upward movement. The contact 17 moves the contact 16 upwardly against the bias of a spring 18 so that a striker 34 on the end of the contact 16 opens a pilot valve 32 to admit compressed gas to the top of the valve 14. The valve 14 moves down to permit compressed gas to flow from the switch chamber through the hollow contact 16 and passage 29 to exhaust apertures 26. As the rotation of the shaft 25 proceeds, the contact 17 is moved down to open the contacts, the contact 16 being arrested by a shoulder 19 abutting a guide tube 13a. The pilot valve 32 is closed by a spring 37 with a delay provided by a damping piston 35. The valve 14 is then reclosed by the gas blast acting on its undersurface and the blast then ceases and the switch chamber remains under pressure. The contact 17 may then perform a further isolating movement. Specification 796,581 is referred to.
