Abstract

821,659. Gas-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Jan. 17, 1958 [Nov. 9, 1956], No. 34328/56. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXIX] In a gas-blast circuit-breaker, e.g. one having the contact arrangement described in Specification 821,069, the blast control and discharge valves comprise aligned, hollow pistons 3 and 4 slidable within valve chests 5 and 6 respectively and provided with operating means for the pistons whereby either of them may be moved at will to uncover the associated valve ports. Valve chest 5 has an axial discharge opening 11 to the contact chamber, via an insulating sleeve 2, and ports 14 communicating with the pressure gas receiver 1 and a valve chest 6 has ports 17 communicating with discharge vent 18. As shown, the pistons are urged apart by a spring 23 and a control rod 28 passes freely through a bore in a spider 26 in each piston, the control rod having abutments 29 which engage the spiders. When the control rod is pulled down, the piston 3 is moved down to uncover the ports 14 so that the gas from the receiver 1 passes through the discharge opening 11 to open the breaker. Upward movement of the rod first returns the piston 3 to its closed position and then lifts the piston 4 to allow the gas in the breaker to be vented via the interiors of the pistons and the discharge vents 18.
