Abstract

778,456. Air-blast switches. I-T-E. CIRCUIT BREAKER CO. Aug. 27, 1954 [Sept. - 4, 1953], No. 24986/54. Class 38(5) An air puffer blowing an arc from the 'contacts 23, 24 towards the arc-chute comprises a piston 32 connected by a linkage 38, 40 to the operating arm 42 and movable in a cylinder 30. When the breaker opens, the piston 32 moves from left to right to force a stream of air through an orifice 52b, tube 55a and nozzle 57a, that portion of the stroke when piston 32 has passed aperture 52b acting as a buffering stroke to prevent rebound of the contacts. Air intakes 60 are provided in one end wall of the cylinder, and an air bleed clearance with adjustable means 63 is provided round the piston rod 37. In another embodiment (Fig, 4, not shown) an adjustable small air vent and an :air intake are provided so that buffering also occurs at the end of the closing stroke. In Fig. 5, an auxiliary piston 72 is driven to the right by piston 32 to provide the buffering action for the opening stroke, the movement of piston 72 to the left being limited by engagement of a pin 95 on piston rod 73 with end wall 62 of the cylinder. Three circumferentially-aligned orifices 52b are provided for a three-pole breaker. Specification 763,747 is referred to.
