734,217. Air-break switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Feb. 5, 1954 [Feb. 6, 1953], No. 3412/53. Class 38 (5). In an air-break circuit-breaker means for transferring the arc from arcing contacts 4b, 5b to an electrode 10 of an arc chute (not shown) include a cylinder 1 secured to the movable contact assembly 2, and a piston 6, rod 6a of which is pivoted to a lever 7 itself pivoted at 7a to a fixed part 8 of the circuit-breaker and connected to assembly 2 through a further lever 7b. A tube 3 is secured to contact arm 4 and slides in an aperture in the cylinder, lock nuts 3a, 3b limiting the movement of the tube and thus of arm 4, and a felt washer 3c sealing the gap between the tube and the cylinder. As the contacts open, the velocity of the piston 6 increases to a maximum at a predetermined time, i.e. just before the final open position so that the jet of air blown through tube 3 is at a maximum during the final period of the stroke. The piston may, alternatively, be fixed to the assembly 2 and the cylinder pivoted to lever 7 in which case the piston-rod is hollow and serves as an air duct.
