Abstract

575,108. Gas-blast switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BROWN, J. K., BLANDFORD, A. R., and ROWLAND, F. G. Feb. 28, 1944, No. 3639. [Class 38 (v)] Gas is suppliec by inlet holes 4 to the arc-space between a fixed contact 5 with arcing fingers 14 and a movable conical contact 7 slidable in a fixed housing 6 as in Specifica tion 558,559 under the actiot of the blast gas At the same time blast-gas passes through an axial bore 18 in the contact stem 15 so as to emerge from the wearing tip 19 before the arc is formed The skin 15 ter minates in a piston 16 slidable in a cylinder 17 to which gas is admitted via hole 20 in the stem, this hole being closed after a short movement of the contact, whereby the trapped gas cushions the end of the contact-movement. A further port 22 in front of the piston 16, an exhaust vent 23 from the housing 6, and a ring of finger-contacts 10 with garter springs 11, may be provided.
