Abstract

1,186,186. Gas blast switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 11 May, 1967 [19 May, 1966], No. 22231/66. Heading H1N. The contacts 13 of a gas-blast switch are arranged at the outlet of a chamber 58 arranged within a gas-filled reservoir 15, a piston 54 coupled to an operating mechanism being arranged to draw gas through a first non-return valve 59 from the reservoir during closing and to deliver it through a second non-return valve 56 to the chamber 58 during opening so that a blast of gas from the outlet extinguishes the arc. The fixed contact 19 forms a portion and a movable arcing contact 26 extends through the fixed contact in the closed position to engage a fixed arcing contact 20; a movable main contact 28 has fingers 29 gripping the fixed contact and is coupled to an overcentre spring toggle 70, 72 and operating piston 66 whose position is controlled by valves 80, 81 operated from the ground by rod 77. Filters 25, 63 clean the recirculating blast gas. The reservoir 15 may be filled with air at 1000 Ibs./in<SP>2</SP>. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), arcing contact 26 may be solid instead of hollow as shown.
