Abstract
924,886. Making furnace electrodes; welding by fusion. W. C. HERAEUS G.m.b.H. Jan. 8, 1962 [Jan. 7, 1961], No. 713/62. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Pieces of metal, e.g. titanium vanadium, zirconium, hafnium, tantalum, niobium, molybdenum or tungsten, are joined by electron beam-welding in a vacuum of at least 10<SP>-3</SP> mm. Hg. to form a consumable electrode which is melted in an evacuated electric furnace by electron bombardment an arc or induction. The welding is carried out in the melting chamber of the furnace or in a chamber in communication therewith.
