Abstract

828,245. Arc melting electrodes. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. March 5, 1957 [March 16, 1956], No. 7194/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(3) A method of arc melting reactive metals, e.g. titanium, under sub-atmospheric pressure with alternating current includes employing a consumable electrode comprising a compacted mass of spongy or powdered reactive metal in which is incorporated a compound of a metal having a lower ionization potential than that of the reactive metal. Suitable compounds, e.g. chlorides, are those of alkali metals or barium. The compound is incorporated in the electrode to provide from 0.03% to 1.00% by weight of the alkali metal or barium. It is stated that the presence of the compound stabilizes the A.C. arc at low pressures, e.g. from 1 to 1000 microns of mercury, thus allowing the electrode feed rate to be automatically controlled.
