1,109,595. Arc melting furnaces. TITANIUM METALS CORPORATION OF AMERICA. 26 April, 1966, No. 18321/66. Heading H5H. A method of arc melting metals or alloys in a three-phase A.C. arc melting furnace, evacuated to a pressure below 1 mm. Hg absolute, employing three consumable electrodes, comprises the steps of deriving the " plasma generating capacity " P of the metal from a given table, or determining the plasma generating capacity of the alloy by averaging the P values derived from the table in respect of the constituent metals thereof, determining the minimum equivalent circular diameter D of each electrode from the formula D = 12À13-1À93 P, and supplying current to the electrodes in excess of 1200 amps. per inch of equivalent circular diameter where P is less than 2; in excess of 1100 amps. per inch where P is between 2 and 3; in excess of 700 amps. per inch where P is between 3 and 4; and in excess of 500 amps. per inch where P is in excess of 4.
